Girls in Rugby Learning Through Sport (G.I.R.L.S) Project is a three-year project being implemented by the Uganda Olympic Committee, Uganda Rugby Union and Swans Sports Club and Funded by Olympic Solidarity. The project seeks to
Empower 10,000 girls aged 12-18 through rugby over 3 years in schools around Wakiso, enhancing their self-confidence , leadership skills and resilience
Raise Awareness and understanding of GBV, equipping girls with knowledge about their rights, GBV prevention and available support systems
Promote gender equality in schools and wider community by challenging traditional gender roles and fostering inclusion through rugby
Create a safe space and supportive environment in schools where girls can learn and speak out against GBV supported by trained teachers, coaches, and mentors.
Engage Boys as allies, using rugby as a platform to promote respect, gender equality, and non-violence.
Objective
To use Rugby as a tool to promote physical fitness, teamwork, leadership, respect, self-discipline, gender equality and GBV awareness among school students.
Target Audience
Students Aged 12-18 years, Both Male and Female students and Teachers, school sports coaches, and peer leaders.
Duration
The project will run for 8-12 weeks (based on the term schedule)
2- 3 sessions per week (60-90 minutes per session)

The Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) through the Olympic Solidarity together with Swans Rugby club officially launched the first day of the G.I.R.L.S against gender-based violence through sport engagement meeting in Entebbe at Innophine Hotel. The three-day workshop brings together community leaders, religious figures, educators, and sports mentors to address the pervasive issue of gender-based violence (GBV) and explore solutions through sport.
The workshop targets both boys and girls, equipping community leaders with knowledge and practical strategies to combat GBV in homes, schools, and communities.
The critical importance of this initiative. Is to reach 10,000 girls and boys in Wakiso district, using sport as a tool to raise awareness and fight gender-based violence.
