Athletics begins in style as Chelangat wins Uganda’s third ISG 2025 Gold Medal

Uganda’s Rebecca Chelangat won a gold medal in the women’s 10,000m final at the Prince Faisal Bin Fahad Stadium in Riyadh city, Saudi Arabia on Monday night. She clocked 32:11:42 ahead of Qatar’s Violah Motosio (32:13:59) and Samiya Hassan Nour from Djibouti.

This is Uganda’s 7th medal overall, and the third gold medal at the 2025 Games.

Meanwhile, Leonard Chemutai finished fourth in the men’s 3000m steeplechase and Javelin thrower Josephine Joyce Lalam did not complete after injuring her knee in first attempt.

Action continues on Tuesday with Athletics as Abel Chebet competes in the men’s 10,000m finals and a couple of middle-distance races. Wrestling will also commences on the day.

The first action will however be in the 400m heats in which Maureen Banura Akiiki takes part.

Tom Dradriga is also in action this Tuesday in the 800m heats as will Haron Adoli in the 400m heats later today

The Para Powerlifter Denis Mbaziira and coach Kenneth Sekiranda jet into Riyadh for the games that end on 21st.

Uganda’s other medals at the Games have been won by Gloria Muzito (50m and 100m freestyle Gold plus a Silver from 200m freestyle),Jesse Ssengonzi (100m butterfly bronze),Alfred Ojok (Light heavy weight -80kg Bronze) and Jemimah Nakawala and Parvin Judith Nangonzi (table tennis women’s Doubles bronze)
