Uganda Women’s 3x3 Olympic Dreams Get Major Boost After Strong France Campaign
By Avitus Ngabirano
Uganda’s women’s 3×3 basketball team has taken a big step toward a first-ever Olympic appearance after a breakthrough run in the FIBA 3×3 Women’s Series in France. The 3×3 Gazelles team competed in three stops; Orleans, Poitiers, and Marseille with their campaign peaking in Marseille where they recorded their highest-ever finish of 6th place. That result in Marseille delivered crucial ranking points for the Federation, which directly impacts Olympic qualification. Earlier in the series, Uganda finished 10th in Orleans and exited in the qualifying draw in Poitiers
U23 Gazelles also delivered in Kenya.
The momentum wasn’t limited to the senior team. Uganda’s U23 women were in action in Mombasa, Kenya, where they won the FIBA 3×3 Youth Nations League. It was a dominant run where Uganda won 4 of the 6 stops, matching the feat they achieved in Kampala in 2024 and Benin in 2025. The victory secures qualification to the FIBA U23 3×3 World Cup for the third year in a row, and marks Uganda’s fifth overall appearance at the U23 World Cup.The points earned by the U23 team will also feed into Uganda’s overall Olympic qualification
With more points expected in August when the U21 teams compete in Tunisia, Uganda’s women are currently ranked No.1 in Africa as of 8th July 2025. If Olympic teams were selected today, Uganda would qualify. However, the official selection date is 1st December 2027, meaning the Gazelles must maintain their ranking over the next two years to secure a spot at LA28.In the meantime, the team will shift focus to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where they will look to build more experience and ranking points. The recent results in France and Kenya have given Uganda’s 3×3 program its biggest boost yet in the push to make Olympic history.
