Victoria Pearls flagged off to Thailand for Inaugural women’s emerging nations trophy
by Grace Kemigisa
Milton Chebet – Assistant Secretary General National Council of Sports has urged the Victoria Pearls – Uganda’s senior women cricket team to believe in themselves, stay disciplined, target to achieve success and fly the Ugandan flag high as they compete in Inaugural women’s emerging nations trophy that will take place in Thailand this month.
The asst sec gen, made these remarks as he flagged off the team at the Lugogo hockey grounds on Monday morning.
“Please as you go out there, know that you are representing Uganda, so you are our ambassadors; You are the aspiration of the country so carry our flag high.” Said the Asst Sec Gen.
He continued “Each one of you has something unique and I know that with teamwork, you are going to achieve success, and your success will be the success of the association. When you succeed, it will be very easy for other partners to come in.” “Target high so that you can achieve the success that we need. I know you have trained hard, believe in yourselves, stay disciplined; discipline is all that you need so that when the coaches tell you something, you are able to do exactly what they want you to do.” “We want to wish you all the best as you go out there. May everything work for the good of our nation.”
In his remarks he Mr. Milton Chebet also applauded the government for supporting sports saying, “The government is financing our teams, our federations and associations; the funding may not be to the tune that every federation or association requires, but at least it is doing something great; because all the federations and associations have been funded.”
He observed that cricket was increasing on the game’s coverage and urged them to continue with the good work stating, “We want to see you (cricket) in every corner of this country.”
The Secretary Gen also congratulated Uganda Cicket on the acquisition of land “We are happy of the developments that you are having recently. We have seen the new home that is taking shape, and we wish to see more of those fields in the near future.”
In October, Cricket Uganda acquired 15 acres of land in Nakasajja-Gayaza to build the nation’s first permanent “Home of Cricket.
The Victoria Pearls Uganda Women’s National Cricket Team will represent the country at the first edition of the Emerging Women’s Trophy 2025; a T20I tourney that will take place in Thailand, from 18th November to 1st December 2025.
The tournament brings together the top 8 women associate countries, five women’s associate members with women’s ODI status – Netherlands, Papua New Guinea, Scotland,
Thailand and the United Arab Emirates; plus, the best three teams from the T20I rankings – Namibia, Uganda and Tanzania.
Uganda’s captain Janet Mbabazi is happy that her troops get a chance to play at this tourney and looks forward to what’s to come “As a captain, I’m excited that we get an opportunity to play such a high quality tournament, but we’d like to keep trusting our process as a team, that regardless of the kind of teams that are there, we just want to believe in our abilities as a team, and have everyone express themselves there with some confidence and just play a game of cricket. At the end of the day, cricket is still cricket, regardless of who we’re playing.”
Talking about Teddy Oyella playing her first ICC tourney the youngsters returning to the team the captain says “Teddy has played the Kwibuka tournament, she’s been part of the team, she played the Canada Series, she missed out on Namibia and stuff, but just the fact that she’s on the team means that she’s worked hard and she’s capable of delivering on the senior squad. She’s our spinning option in case we need to bowl more spinners in a particular game. As a captain and the senior players on the team we will try and encourage her to reduce the pressure that might come with, because I do understand that playing at that stage comes with a lot of pressure, especially for a youngster, but if we can support her and help her manage it throughout the tournament, she should be great.”
“Melissa has played close to 50 or more than 50 games for the team, I’m very confident that she’s going to do great. Mutoni has got the support of the team, and she’s bowled up front for the team. We’ve asked her to strike, to come and bowl on the powerplay, and even in the death, and she’s striked. She’s someone who came on the team as a debutant and she was asked to do the big job upon a bowler, and she did it exceptionally well.”
Commenting about the team’s batting strategy, since it’s where the team struggles most; the captain said, “Batting is confidence, you can do analysis on a team, and if you don’t have the confidence to execute at the end of the day, you’re bound to fail. But just doing a bit of research, knowing the kind of teams that you’ll be playing, the bowlers that you’ll be facing, helps build a bit of confidence for you.The girls have been trying to do that. I know that we’re going to try and talk positively in the camp and just encourage each other to express themselves down in the wicket. I have no doubt that they’ll be able to execute in Thailand.”
The nations that will finish top four in from the Emerging Nations Trophy event will progress to another new currently unnamed tournament that will take place in 2027. That tournament will feature four full members that miss out on the 2027 Champions Trophy along with the top four of the preceding Emerging Nations Trophy.
These new tournaments are part of the ICC’s plans to expand the Women’s T20 World Cup to 16 teams from 2030. 12 teams will compete in 2026 and expand to 16 by 2030, creating more qualifying berths and a clearer competitive ladder for emerging programmes.
In Thailand the games will be hosted at the Terdthai Cricket Ground and the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in Bangkok. Uganda will open their campaign on November 20th, 2025, against Scotland at Terdthai Cricket Ground
