She cranes off to great start in the Celtic Cup
By John Ssentamu
Uganda’s national netball team the She Cranes’ is off to a great start at the Celtic Cup in Scotland.
Uganda ably dispatched Namibia 65-38 in a total show of dominance at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow.
“Our game was good. Against Namibia we had our strong points that we utilized especially defense that restricted them” said Coach Rashid Mubiru.
In the absence of team Captain Rachel Nanyonga, goal attack Shadiah Nasanga was lethal in partnership with goal Scorer Mary Nuba and the center court that was well marshalled by center Margaret Bagala, wing attack Fildauce Namulema and team Captain Lilian Ajio who was deployed as a wing defender.
The other positions on the starting rota were filled by goal defender Gloria Ayaa and goal keeper Shaffie Nalwanja.
Uganda led 13-11 by the end of the first quarter and went into half time 31-21-up.
Going into the final quarter,Uganda led by 18,48-30 and held firm for a 27 point game,65-38.
During the game, the technical bench led by Rashid Mubiru assisted by Meeme Ruth used all players with Christine Nakitto, Lilian Achola,Faridah Kadondi and debutants Malisera Akello and Specioza Namukose all getting their chance to taste the action.
In fact, of the entire team, only Shadiah Nasanga who was unsurprisingly named lady of the match, played all minutes.
During the dominant display,Uganda impressed in ball interceptions with Ayaa,Kadondi,Ajio,Nakitto and Nalwanja with a great showing.
Action for Uganda in this round-robin and ranking tournament continues tomorrow Thursday with a date against Northern Ireland (at 5.30pm EAT) that will be followed by dates against Scotland, Zimbabwe and Wales.
While the team still misses team Captain Rachel Nanyonga, prior to tip-off,arrival of team Doctor Ataro Ayella was celebrated with memory of the role he played the last time the She Cranes’ travelled to the UK (early this year), when most of the players needed medical attention that he ably provided.
