Beatrice Ayikoru applauds ANOCA; Rallies more women into sports
The Uganda Olympic Committee Secretary General, Beatrice Ayikoru, has been honored with the ANOCA Gender Award, recognizing her outstanding leadership and contribution to African sports. She was among six women across the continent celebrated for advancing gender inclusion in sports.
The others are Lydia Nshekera who is Burundi’s minister for sport and also NOC President, Filomena Fortes,who is the NOC President for Cape Verde, Aicha Garad Ali who is the NOC President of Djibouti, Bouchra Hajij who is the African volleyball President and Salma Mouhali, the Vice President of the International tennis federation.
The award was presented by UOC and Commonwealth Games Uganda President, Dr. Donald Rukare, during a ceremony held at the UOC headquarters in Kampala.
Dr Rukare had received the award on her behalf during the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa -ANOCA Gender equality and diversity forum in Bujumbura Burundi at an occasion graced by the ANOCA President Mustapha Berraf who hailed the award.
“These gender equality awards are not just honorary distinctions.They are powerful symbols of recognition,a beacon that illuminates the road covered so far and the ground still to be covered” he said.
In her remarks, Ms. Ayikoru thanked ANOCA for acknowledging women’s efforts in sports development.
She said the recognition motivates more women to take up leadership roles, adding that when more women lead, more will be inspired to participate.
Ayikoru also shared how she balances family, work, and leadership by managing her time effectively and staying focused on athletes’ interests.
She encouraged women to be confident, humble, and willing to serve, saying their participation is vital for the future of sports in Africa.
