National Cross Country Goes To Mbale As Selection Takes Center Stage.
By John Ssentamu
Over 1,000 athletes are set to storm Mbale Golf Course this Saturday for the 32nd National Cross Country Championships, marking the event’s first-ever edition in Mbale.
The competition, organized by Uganda Athletics, will help select the national team for the 2026 World Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee, USA due January 10 2026.
Top stars Jacob Kiplimo and Joshua Cheptegei headline a strong field, with Kiplimo eyeing another victory after his Chicago Marathon triumph.
The competition will be in categories with the junior men running eight kilometers (which is four loops) while the junior women will race for six kilometers.
The seniors will go for ten kilometers with the mixed relay scheduled for eight kilometers.
Uganda Athletics will choose six senior men,six senior women,12 juniors from both genders and four runners for the mixed relays.
The event also carries over six million shillings in cash prizes for winners across U-20 and senior men’s and women’s categories.
The shift from Tororo that has hosted the previous five editions, to Mbale has excited the Bugisu region, once home to greats like Catherine Webombesa and Wakou Paul. Organizers say the move aims to revive long-distance running heritage.
With a growing crop of young elite runners, Saturday’s race promises fierce competition and surprises on the course.
