Skipper Janet Mbabazi guides the pearls to first victory at the ICC women's emerging nations trophy
By Grace Kemigisa
Victoria Pearls skipper Janet Mbabazi was the heroine in their game against Papua New Guinea(PNG) women as the batting all rounder scored 60 runs off 58 balls in her batting spell and 2 wickets in her bowling spell to lead her charges to a 4 runs victory.
In the game played at 5:30am Ugandan time, 9:30am Thailand time, Uganda won the toss and decided to bat first at the Terdthai Cricket Ground in Bangkok Thailand, setting a score of 114 runs for 4 wickets.
As usual it’s was Janet Mbabazi (60) not out and Esther Iloku (5) who opened the batting with IIloku falling in the 5th over giving way to Nakisuyi (20) to join Mbabazi who together put on a 69 runs partnership to boost Uganda’s total.
Mbabazi having a time of her life against medium pacers, that even after she was dropped at 40 runs, she continued her formative batting till the end.
After Nakisuyi’s dismissal only Nampina (13) made a significant contribution to the score before Uganda could complete its 20 overs.
In the defense, the pearls had a rough start fighting to get wickets, only managing to dismiss
Naoani Vare in the 4th over and waiting until the 11th for another breakthrough.
Looking like the game was done and dusted in the 12th, PNG needing 72 runs from 46 balls, Uganda’a bowlers lost balance and licked as many runs allowing PNG to run off to 98 runs for 6 wickets in the 17th, 20 runs shy of the required total.
When all looked like the game was running away from the pearls the Captian yet again struck picking Pauke Siaka’s (39) wicket and pulling the game back to Uganda with PNG only managing to go as far as 113/7 in their 20 overs and Uganda winning by four runs.
Mbabazi and Amuge claimed two wickets each as Aweko, Ariokot and Nakisuyi claimed one each
The win is a great boost for the Uganda side who started off with two back to back losses against Scotland and Namibia respectively.
With a rest day for the pearls on Monday, the team will be hoping to come back even stronger against UAE on 25th; to improve their chances of progressing to the next league.
Only the teams that finish in th top four positions will be able to progress to the next league.
