Uganda’s women senior cricket team the Victoria pearls are set for the 2025 ICC Women’s Emerging Nations Trophy.

It’s a first of its kind competition that will take place in Thailand between the 18th of November and 1st December 2025.

Fresh from the Canada series that was held in Kampala last month, the pearls are excited about the challenge ahead as Head Coach Deus Muhumuza states

“The whole team is excited I mean, these are quality games, and that’s something we’ve been looking for. You know, the more you play a stronger opposition, the better you get. It’s a chance for the Victoria Pearls to gain more ranking points and it also creates another tournament that players look up to. It’s just not a tournament you are invited to – it is based on rankings; it encourages the Victoria Pearls to keep playing hard so that they maintain the ranking and be able to qualify for the tournament.”

Talking about areas they have worked on in their preparations, the Coach says “our main focus has been on building mental strength, we find it linked to their physical fitness, game awareness, and of course skill development.”

The tourney in Thailand will also be a continuation of the pearls’ yearlong game engagement that has so far garnered 90 games, a combination of T20Is and the local national team trial games against U17 boys; which is the goal for the leadership in terms of game exposure and match fitness.

Ahead of the tourney the coach also adds that “we have had team analysis on all those teams that we are going to face in Thailand and the players have tried out different simulations given what we expect to encounter in Thailand and what is left is the execution.”

He doesn’t stop there and says that “the players were trying to adapt and really getting their game sense up there and we believe they will do well. We’ll keep it simple, push the players to stick to the basics, be more consistent in terms of executing the basics, and improve their game awareness.”

He emphasis that their target is to get in the ODI region and that is in the top 16 women ranking and this tournament gives them a better picture of where they are and what they need to do to make sure they step into that zone.

Generally, the leadership and technical team of the Victoria pearls is hoping the girls will express themselves at this event.
The inaugural edition of the Women’s Emerging Nations Trophy which is a Twenty20 International (T20I) cricket tournament will be contested by top eight women’s associate members.

Five of those teams hold ODI status and they are Netherlands, Papua New Guinea, Scotland, Thailand and United Arab Emirates.

The other three are the highest-ranked teams in ICC Women’s T20I Team Rankings as of 1 May 2025; Namibia, Uganda and Tanzania.

Uganda being 7th in the 8 team ranking, will gain a great deal of points if it manages a win against any of the top six teams.

A squad of 14 has been selected to represent Uganda at this inaugural edition of the Women’s Emerging Nations Trophy and the team will be led by Janet Mbabazi.

The team will includes players Esther Iloku, Kevin Awino, Consy Aweko, Immaculate Nakisuyi, Rita Musamali, Stephanie Nampiina, Sarah Akiteng, Proscovia Alako, Kevin Amuge, Teddy Oyella, Naume Amongin and youngsters Malisa Ariokot and Irene Mutonyi who return to the squad after completing their UCE exams.

Sarah Tino and Jimia Mohammed who were part of the Canada series have been left out of the team as Teddy Oyella retains her position and will be making her ICC event debut at this tourney.

After Thailand the Uganda cricket leadership will move to Jinja for the Under-19 and Under-23 camp early next year.

That camp is expected to increase the women pool of players for future competitions.

The Victoria pearls leave for Thailand on the 17th November 2025 and will start their campaign on the 20th November 2025.
