Waterfalls Elite Women’s League 2026 Day 1: Kayakers and Rafters come out on top
BY Grace Joyce Kemigisa
Itanda Kayakers Make Strong Opening-Day statement
The 2026 Waterfalls Elite League (Women) bowled off with an exciting contest on day one as Itanda Kayakers registered a convincing 32-run victory over Bujjagali Rafters in the opening match of the tournament.
After winning the toss, Bujjagali Rafters opted to bowl first and made an immediate impact with early breakthroughs. The Kayakers’ top order struggled to find momentum as Janet Mbabazi (4 off 4 balls) and Lorna Anyait (8 off 12) were dismissed cheaply, leaving Itanda on the back foot in the early stages of the innings.
However, a resilient middle-order performance turned the tide Jimia Abdallah Muhammed anchored the innings superbly with a well-compiled 48 off 39 deliveries, displaying composure and shot selection under pressure. She received valuable support from Namiro Mary, who contributed 15 off 17 balls, while Immaculate Nakisuuyi added a patient 10 off 23 as Itanda Kayakers battled their way to a total of 111 for 9 wickets.
Bujjagali Rafters’ bowlers though they dished out 18 extras were quite effective with the ball Kevin Amuge leading the attack by claiming 3 wickets for 18 runs. Malisa Ariokot was equally impressive, returning figures of 2 for 8 to keep the Kayakers’ scoring in check; Ending the first innings at 111/9.
Chasing 112 for victory, Bujjagali Rafters began their innings with promise, showing intent in the early overs. However, as the innings progressed, runs became increasingly difficult to come by Stephanie Nampiina top-scored with 18 off 27 balls, while Akurut Asumin(16 off 26), Kevin Awino (15 off 23), and Malisa Ariokot (10 off 8) all made starts but were unable to convert them into match-defining contributions.
Rather than relying on frequent wickets, Itanda Kayakers showcased exceptional bowling discipline and sharp fielding, which proved decisive. Ariago Michelle stood out with figures of 2 for 11, including a maiden over, effectively strangling the Rafters’ run flow. Teddy Oyella and Jane Amongin chipped in with a wicket apiece, maintaining constant pressure throughout the innings.
Bujjagali Rafters eventually fell short, finishing on 79 for 5 as they ran out of deliveries, handing Itanda Kayakers a well-earned 32-run victory to open their campaign.
Itanda Kayakers will be back in action on day two of the Waterfalls Elite League, facing Karuma Rapids in the morning before a second encounter against Bujjagali Rafters in the afternoon, carrying confidence from an impressive opening performance.
Redemption for Bujjagali Rafters in Second Game
Bujjagali Rafters bounced back in emphatic fashion in their second outing of the Waterfalls Elite League women’s league 2026 securing a convincing seven-wicket victory over Karuma Rapids after a dominant all-round performance.
After winning the toss, Bujjagali Rafters yet again elected to bowl first a decision that paid immediate dividends. Their bowlers struck early, removing both Karuma Rapids openers within the powerplay. Esther Iloku (2 off 8 balls) and Ilora Joan (1 off 7 balls) were sent back to the dugout cheaply, leaving the Rapids on the back foot from the outset.
Despite the early breakthroughs, Bujjagali were slightly wasteful in the field, conceding 16 extras. However, disciplined bowling and tight lines ensured Karuma Rapids never truly found momentum.
Hope Shillah Mbeiza anchored the innings with a patient 37 off 53 balls, while Phiona Egaru Kulume played a valuable unbeaten knock of 19 off 19 balls. Rita Musamali contributed 13 off 23 balls, but the lack of partnerships hurt the Rapids’ scoring rate.
Karuma Rapids eventually closed their innings on 92 for 5 in 20 overs, a total that always looked below par.
The bowling honors for Bujjagali Rafters were shared around. Irene Alumo was the standout, finishing with impressive figures of 2 for 17, while Ruth Mwanga and Sarah Akiteng chipped in with a wicket apiece to maintain pressure throughout the innings.
Chasing a modest target of 93, Bujjagali Rafters approached the task with confidence and intent. Kevin Awino delivered a match-winning performance, top-scoring with a fluent 51 off 44 balls, anchoring the chase and keeping the scoreboard ticking.
She received solid support from Stephanie Nampiina, whose composed 24 off 23 balls ensured there were no late stumbles. The pair’s controlled aggression dismantled the Karuma Rapids bowling attack and steadily guided the Rafters toward victory.
Karuma Rapids showed discipline with the ball, conceding just six extras, but their efforts were undermined by lapses in the field. Consylate Aweko Nimungu was the lone bright spot, claiming 2 wickets for 22 runs, yet the total proved insufficient to mount a serious defence.
Bujjagali Rafters reached 94 for 3 in just 14 overs, sealing the match with ease and marking a strong redemption performance after their earlier setback.
Both teams will return to action tomorrow, with Karuma Rapids featuring in the morning fixture, while Bujjagali Rafters take the field again in the afternoon, looking to build on this commanding victory.
