Athletics Team Departs With Optimism.
Uganda Athletics contingent of 17 members has departed for Riyadh Saudi Arabia where the Islamic Solidarity Games have entered the tenth day.
“Of course to be part of the Islamic Solidarity Games is super great.I am looking forward to do my best” said Halima Nakayi who runs in the 800m and relays.
The team will upon arrival (2.30am Friday) have a few days to rest before entering the fray.
“Concerning Uganda Athletics,we are ready.We shall accept any kind of medal because we have good athletes and we are going to do our best to try improve the nation’s medal haul” said Leni Shida whose specialty is the 400m but also does the relay.
The team was seen off by national council of sports assistant General secretary Milton Chebet who said that “team Uganda in Riyadh is doing well.Now we are sending a team of athletics and we know medals are coming, and as government we are grateful”.
The rules at such games have changed to accepting athletes entrance into the games village three days to their competition and these must then depart two days upon finishing.
Uganda’s first contingent to the games included table tennis, swimming, weightlifting and boxing.
The boxers and weightlifting are already back home while table tennis and swimming leave by Saturday.
Athletics,will next week be joined by wrestlers and Para-Powerlifting.
Uganda currently sits pretty on the medal table with six including two golds,one silver and three bronze.
