History Maker Gloria Muzito Unstoppable
By David Isabirye
Â
Uganda’s Olympian Swimmer Gloria Muzito has continued to shine at the ongoing Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Muzito, who on Sunday won the 50m Freestyle Gold medal has added a Gold and silver in the 100 meters Freestyle and in the 200 meters freestyle respectively.
This brings her tally of medals at the Games to three and for Uganda, the count is now four with the other being a bronze by light heavyweight boxer Alfred Ojok.
Apart from the Muzito exploits that kept the Ugandan flag high on Tuesday, table tennis youngster Jemimah Nakawala is also still alive in the Singles and will negotiate a quarter final today.
Nakawala’s other table tennis colleagues Joshua Magaya(R32), Joseph Sebatindira (R64) and Parvin Judith Nangonzi (R16) fell and will now turn focus to the doubles and mixed doubles.
In weightlifting, Steven Ojede and Aisha Namataka displayed resilience but fell short in their respective weight categories.
Aisha Namataka lifted 70,75 and 80 kilograms in the clean and jerk to finish in a respectable 8th position. She was also brave in the snatch category in which she lifted a grand total of 140 kilograms.
On his part, Steven Ojede had a good lift of 110 kilograms but faltered on his second and third to finish 12th in the snatch category.
In Clean and Jerk he again had a few good and bad moments that kept him out of medal contention.
In the highlight action on Wednesday, Olympian Jesse Ssengonzi will contest the 100m butterfly final.
Uganda sent 39 athletes to the 2025 Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh.
So far, only table tennis, swimming, boxing and weightlifting have competed with athletics, Para powerlifting and wrestling still to come.
