Throwing it back to an inspiring moment when IOC President Thomas Bach visited Uganda, warmly welcomed by NOC President Donald Rukare and IOC Member William Blick. Accompanied by Olympic legend Joshua Cheptegei and fellow Olympians Winnie Nanyondo and Halima Nakaayi, they planted a tree at the Uganda Wildlife Authority Centre, marking a significant addition to the Olympic Forest Network
President Bach engaged in a heartfelt Q&A session with Ugandan athletes, who expressed their gratitude for the IOC’s unwavering support and excitement for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The gala dinner that followed was a celebration of their achievements, where Bach highlighted the unique power of the Olympics to unite the world, especially in challenging times.
President Bach visited the Uganda Olympic Committee headquarters, where he signed the NOC’s “Golden Book,” congratulating them on their outstanding work in promoting sport and Olympic values. He met with the UOC’s Executive Board, who thanked the IOC for its support and shared highlights of their athletes’ successes at the Paris 2024 Games.
Later, President Bach met with Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja and UNHCR Chief Filippo Grandi. He emphasized the vital role the Ugandan National Olympic Committee plays in promoting the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in areas like gender parity and climate action. They visited the Game Connect project in Kampala, which supports the mental well-being of young refugees through sport. Witnessing the joy and resilience of these young individuals truly showcased the impact of sport in transforming lives.
The visit reaffirmed the IOC’s commitment to supporting athletes and communities globally, proving that sport can indeed change lives and bring us all together.
