Uganda’s most celebrated cyclist Charles Kagimu has arrived in Glasgow where he takes part in the track cycling genre. 

He will ride in the two categories of men’s 4000m individual pursuit and also in the men’s 1000m time trial at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow.

“Though these are generally new genres, i have had the perfect preparation and generally, all is well” said Kagimu.

Track cycling uses specialized track bicycles that feature a single fixed gear, no brakes, and no freewheel mechanism. These lightweight, aerodynamic machines are purpose-built for high-speed racing on wooden or concrete banked tracks known as velodromes.

In Africa, only about three countries; South Africa, Egypt and Nigeria have velodromes.

In fact in Uganda, a few riders including Mary Aleper, Erukana Kibuuka, Arnold Kaala and John Odoto have ever ridden in Velodromes.

“For now, it’s a venture into the unknown that we expect Kagimu to negotiate” Coach Muwonge Mahaba told us. 

 

He added that, “Our colleagues in Egypt offered us an opportunity to go train for free and we shall explore that opportunity in the future”.
