Team Uganda to the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games was officially flagged off earlier today at Mestil Hotel in Kampala, in a ceremony presided over by Rt. Hon. Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja.The flag-off brought together athletes, coaches, sports administrators, and government officials ahead of the games scheduled for July 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland.In her remarks, the Rt. Hon. The Prime Minister reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to athlete welfare.“The government is committed to ensuring that you are well taken care of and fairly remunerated so that you can represent our country with pride,” Nabbanja said. She urged the team to uphold the values of sport on the international stage.“I encourage you to compete with integrity, determination, and discipline. Go and make Uganda proud. We wish you success in Glasgow,” she added.The Prime Minister later handed over the national flag to team captains,Husnah Kukundakwe and Bate Nuhu, symbolizing the official mandate for Team Uganda.

Team Uganda is composed of 55 athletes to compete in 10 disciplines, including 5 para-athletes from 8 federations. Of the delegation, 34 are female and 21 are male. Women will feature in all disciplines except weightlifting and track cycling.The breakdown is as follows: Athletics: 8 female | 9 male Judo: 1 male | 1 female Swimming: 4 male | 3 female Para-Swimming: 2 female Track Cycling: 1 male Netball: 12 female Para-Powerlifting: 2 female | 1 male Weightlifting: 1 male Boxing: 4 male | 2 female Basketball 3×3: 4 female Key athletes named include: Athletics: Peruth Chemutai (3000m Steeplechase), Oscar Chelimo (5000m), Leni Shida (400m), Rebecca Chelangat (Long Distance) Boxing Bombers: Alfred Ojok (Light Heavyweight 80kgs), Abdul Aziz (Heavyweight 92kgs), Emily Nakalema (Welterweight 65kgs) Swimming: Jesse Ssengonzi, Gloria Muzito, Kirabo Namutebi Para-Swimming: Husnah Kukundakwe, Condoleeza Nakazibwe Para-Powerlifting: Denis Mbaziira, Janet Nakayobyo, Rebecca Zawedde Weightlifting: Davis Niyoyita (55kg, African No.2) Track Cycling: Charles Kagimu Basketball 3×3 Women: Melissa Akullu, Jane Asinde, Perus Nyamwenge, Jamila Nansikombi Netball She Cranes: Mary Nuba, Shadiah Nassanga, Margaret Bagala, Gloria Ayaa. Coaches: Rashid Mubiru and Ruth Meeme The She Cranes recently had warm up games against South Africa in preparation for Glasgow.They are in Group B alongside New Zealand, Jamaica, Wales, Scotland, and Trinidad and Tobago. Their campaign opens on 25th July 2026 against Wales.

Later in the evening, Team Uganda was hosted by Ms. Tiffany Kirlew, British Deputy High Commissioner, on behalf of H.E. Lisa J. Chesney, British High Commissioner, at the British High Commissioner’s residence.

Athletes and administrators shared experiences on preparations and expectations for the Games. Officials noted that the engagement reflects the strong bilateral relations between Uganda and the United Kingdom, and the shared commitment to using sport for youth development and diplomacy.Team Uganda is expected to depart for Glasgow on 21st July 2026.
