The Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC)/Commonwealth Games Uganda (CGU), in partnership with the Presidential Initiative on Banana Industrial Development (PIBID) and the Banana Industrial Research and Development Centre (BIRDC), successfully hosted the Olympic Day Tooke Run 2026 in Bushenyi District.
The event brought together athletes, students, sports enthusiasts, schools, local leaders, and community members for a lively celebration of movement, healthy living, and the importance of good nutrition. Held under the global Olympic Day theme, “You Can Do This! Let’s Move,” and the Tooke Run theme, “Move, Learn and Discover for Nutrition-Care,” the event carried a clear message: active living and proper nutrition are key to building healthier communities.
One of the major highlights of the day was the growing partnership between UOC/CGU and BIRDC. This collaboration continues to promote nutrition as an important part of athlete development, community wellbeing, and everyday health. Through the partnership, greater attention is being paid to the value of nutritious local foods and their role in supporting both sports performance and healthy lifestyles.
The Tooke Run reflected a broader understanding of sport beyond competition. It connected physical activity, learning, culture, and nutrition in a practical way that spoke to athletes, schools, families, and communities. By promoting locally available foods and healthy lifestyle choices, the initiative encouraged Ugandans to view nutrition as an accessible and important part of active living.
The day opened with warm-up exercises and aerobics sessions, setting an energetic tone for the participants. Runners then took part in the 5km, 10km, and 21km race categories, attracting elite athletes, young runners, students, and community members. Beyond the races, the event provided space for nutrition awareness, learning, and community interaction, with special emphasis on the value of locally grown foods such as matooke.
Matooke was a central part of the day’s message. As one of Uganda’s most widely consumed staple foods, it holds great nutritional, cultural, and economic importance. It contributes to food security, supports livelihoods, and remains closely tied to Uganda’s national identity. Through its partnership with PIBID and BIRDC, the Tooke Run helped promote greater appreciation for local foods as part of a balanced, healthy diet.
The nutrition-focused approach also aligns with the Olympic Movement’s wider commitment to wellbeing. It reflects UOC’s growing interest in using sport as a platform for practical health education and community development.
Throughout the event, participants demonstrated the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect. The strong participation from schools, sports clubs, local leaders, and community members showed a shared commitment to using sport as a tool for positive change.
UOC and CGU reaffirmed their commitment to expanding similar initiatives nationwide, with a continued focus on sport, health, inclusion, and community engagement. The Olympic Day Tooke Run 2026 showed that when sport and nutrition come together, they can inspire powerful messages and create lasting impact.
The successful hosting of the event in Bushenyi marks an important step in strengthening the connection between sport and nutrition in Uganda. More than just a race, the Tooke Run served as a platform for education, community connection, cultural pride, and healthier living.
As Uganda continues to promote active lifestyles and better nutrition, the UOC-Nutrition partnership stands out as a meaningful model for building stronger athletes and healthier communities.
