Uganda Athletics Holds National Athletics Coaches Forum

The Uganda Athletics Federation convened its first National Athletics Coaches’ Forum at Mandela National Stadium to advance athletics development. Key outcomes included the election of Sarah Nambawa and Abdallah Muhammad as Association Representatives.

 

Presentations focused on governance and safeguarding, with Madam Beatrice Ayikoru unveiling a policy to prevent harm and ensure athlete welfare. The policy establishes reporting systems, promotes child protection, and enforces zero tolerance for abuse.The Safeguarding policy prevents all forms of harm affecting athletes,participants and any other vulnerable person involved and engaged in the sport of athletics in Uganda.The key objectives of this policy include; to establish transparent reporting and case management systems, to promote child protection, athlete welfare and safe athletics, ensure compliance with national and international safeguarding standards, strengthen organizational accountability frameworks, provide clear expectations for all stakeholders, support survivors and ensure access to timely confidential assistance and to foster a culture of zero tolerance against abuse and misconduct in athletics.This policy applies to all individuals including athletes, coaches and technical officials, chaperones, medical and physiotherapy personnel, service providers to athletics clubs.

Speakers emphasized coaches’ roles in athlete development, including skill-building, stakeholder engagement, and risk management. Mr. Mukiibi Charles presented on the roles and responsibilities of coaches in development of athletes and athletics with responsibilities of the coach to athletics development including developing coaching skills and knowledge, working with technical officials, working with parents and stakeholders, including risk management plans, respecting legal and ethical issues associated with the athletes, and being inclusive.

 

Mr. Innocent Asiimwe, a member of the Development Commission and Lecturer of Sport and Exercise Science at Gulu University highlighted the Athletics Coach Licensing System, urging coaches to obtain certification to validate their expertise.The Athletics Coach License is a formal certification verifying that a coach has met specific training, competence and ethical standards set by Uganda Athletics. It validates skills, ensures compliance with professional standards and acts as a trust signal for employers, often required to manage teams at specific levels.

 

The forum enabled coaches to voice concerns, yielding recommendations for government support. Coaches are now poised to drive Uganda’s athletics growth with renewed guidance and collaboration.
