A one Year program that happened at Makerere University under master Kwangjoo kim from kukkiwon had a total number of 20 trainees, 2 trainees failed, 17 passed Upgrading from red belt to Black belt while one got a blue belt.
This was the second intake of the UPDF Taekwondo training program organised by UPDF and Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Uganda
The first intake that was held last year had 13 trainees from different sectors of the army in Uganda including Chieftaincy of Defence Intelligence and Security, (CDIS) Military Police, Special Force Command (SFC) among others.
While addressing the Trainees at the pass out ceremony that happened at Onomo hotel in Kampal, the guest of honor Brigadier General Wycliffe Keita said this programme demonstrates the professionalism and dedication of the UPDF.
It also serves as a meaningful example of practical cooperation between the Republic of Korea and Uganda.
“Defence cooperation is strengthened not only through strategic dialogue but also through initiatives such as this training, which help cultivate discipline, readiness, and mutual understanding among our forces” Keita added.
He expressed his sincere appreciation to the UPDF leadership for their enduring partnership, and to Master Kwangjoo Kim from Kukkiwon for his exceptional commitment in leading this programme.
“Their combined efforts have elevated the UPDF Taekwondo training into an important pillar of our defence cooperation”.
The third intake of the UPDF- Taekwondo training program will be starting in January 2026 at Makerere University.
History of Taekwondo in Uganda
For so many Years Uganda and south Korean have been working jointly to promote the sport of Taekwondo in the country.
In 1969 Master Nam Suk Kim from South Korea was invited to teach the Uganda Prisons staff. He introduced the martial art to the country, and the Uganda Prisons headquarters became the central hub for the sport’s development.
Other Korean masters have been coming to Uganda to help further the sport’s growth, including Master Pak who came to Uganda in 1970s to train Uganda Police Force.
Early 1900s Master Lee started Lee Taekwondo club in Kisugu a Kampala Suburb that was later taken on by Charity Sports Centre Academy (CSCA).
