Kenya is leading the tug of war table at the 15th edition of the East Africa Community Inter-Parliamentary games that are been hosted here in Uganda.

The tug of war competition that happened at Lugogo cricket oval in Kampala had 4 women teams headlined by Uganda the host, Kenya, South Sudan, and East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).

The men’s competition had only two teams in what was a ‘Migingo-derby of sorts’ between Uganda and Kenya.

Kenya who came in this competition well prepared and ready to revenge against the hosts for defeating them in the 14th edition of the games, got it’s first win from the men’s team.

Despite the fact that Uganda’s men’s team looked stronger, Kenya never gave them any chance to show their cheering supporters how much they trained by ending the game 2-0 in favor of Kenya.

Kenya in the lead

The second game was between South Sudan versing EALA team in the women category.

As strong as an iron that is how South Sudan women team as they were defeating EALA women team 2-0.

In all the sets, EALA never had a chance to fight back and it was an easy win for the South Sudan ladies.

Uganda women’s team came ready for a fight for their country’s glory after the man had lost against Kenya. It however became another ‘tug of war’ for the Ugandan ladies who lost to Kenya 0-2.

In an easy way, Kenya won the first set which gave Uganda a lesson as they prepared for the second set of the game.

Uganda came back stronger in the second set and it was Uganda’s best set played in the day one of the tug of war competitions.

The set last close to four minutes with Uganda clearly on top for most time but fell short to a late Kenya resurgence.

Uganda’s win on day one of the competition came after defeating EALA 2-0 in the women category while Kenya Women defeated South Sudan 2-0.

This was Uganda’s poorest performance in tug of war in these competitions and Rushenyi county member of parliament Naome Kabasharira attributes this poor performance to the ongoing campaigns.

“We have all been busy in our counties hunting for the votes so we had limited time to train together as a team”

Kabasharira says these competitions are good to all the participating countries as they bring unity amongst themselves.

Kintu Edmund the federation of tug of war associations (FUTWA) in Uganda who also was the judge of the competition says Uganda would have won the day one of the competition but the shoes they used could not favor them.

“Tug of war as a sport has specific shoes that are being used while in competitions likes these but Uganda used different shoes and that cost them” he explained.

In all the teams that participated in day one of the competitions, it was only Kenya that had shoes that are at least recommended for the sport.
