Gloria Muzito (Oly) Swims To Islamic Solidarity Games 2025 Glory
By David Isabirye
Day two of the Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh,Saudi Arabia yielded two medals for Uganda with Gloria Muzito’s 50 meter dash in the swimming freestyle final the best collection.
“I am so happy and so thankful. This means a lot to me” she said.
“I dedicate it to my parents, coaches,my family and everyone who has been there for me”.
Muzito who has risen through the Uganda swimming ranks glided against formidable opposition and despite being pushed to the end, held on at the Riyadh Olympic Sports complex swimming pool in 25:59 much to the ululation of the Ugandan fans.
But apart from the Muzito ‘golden swim’ which ironically came late in the evening to provide the perfect icing and fit the adage of all is well that ends well, day two of the games provided mixed feelings for Uganda.
Uganda’s other hopes for medals in Aquatics were ended after Jesse Sengonzi finished 5th in the 50m butterfly final.
Despite defeat, boxer Alfred Ojok celebrated a major milestone with a bronze medal at the games following a Semifinal loss to Turkey’s Sultan Osmanli in the light heavy weight -80kg category at the Promenda Art Tower Ring.
For starters, the rules in boxing are that a Semifinal loss guarantees a bronze medal.
For Dubai based weightlifter Faruku Figo Kyambadde, the gallant effort ended out of the medal bracket in both snatch and ‘clean and jerk’ of the 65kg Cluster.
In table tennis, the girls lost a quarter final 1-8 to Iran while the boys, edged Guyana to enter the quarter final that they also lost 1-8 against Turkiye.
Action at the games where Uganda sent 39 athletes from seven sports disciplines continues today at various venues across Riyadh.
The highlight for Uganda will be the Swimming relays in which a lot is expected from the quartet of Muzito,Jesse Sengonzi,Tendo Mukalazi and Tara Kisawuzi Naluwoza.
Other Ugandan athletes at the sixth edition of the games are from wrestling, athletics and para powerlifting.
