FUBA appoints Goran Lojo as new Silverbacks head coach
The Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (FUBA) has confirmed the appointment of Bosnian tactician Goran Lojo as the new head coach of the Uganda men’s national basketball team (the Silverbacks) in a move aimed at elevating the country’s competitiveness on the international stage.
This is the second time FUBA is appointing the gaffer; who they had appointed back in 2023 to coach the women’s national basketball team (the Gazelles); but the coach left without managing a single game opting for the Great Britain Youth team coach role.
FUBA asserts that Goran Lojo brings with him a wealth of international experience, having worked across elite club basketball, national teams and youth development systems throughout Europe; and his arrival reflects its long-term strategy to strengthen the technical foundation and global profile of Ugandan basketball.
A highly regarded coach from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Lojo is best known for his transformative spell as head coach of the Bosnia and Herzegovina women’s national team. During his tenure, the team enjoyed the most successful period in its history, finishing fifth at the FIBA Women’s EuroBasket and qualifying for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup for the first time.
At club level, Lojo has built an impressive résumé in Germany’s top-tier women’s league, the Damen Basketball Bundesliga (DBBL). He guided teams to historic playoff appearances and crowned his success by winning a national championship title with Rutronik Stars Keltern. His coaching career is widely noted for improving team performance through clear systems, strong player development and a culture of competitive discipline.
Beyond senior national teams, Lojo has extensive experience in elite youth development and international basketball programs. He currently heads the youth department at BG Göttingen and also serves as head coach of the club’s U19 men’s Bundesliga team. FUBA believes his ability to deliver short-term results while building sustainable long-term structures will be key to the Silverbacks’ progress.
The federation added that more information regarding Lojo’s official unveiling, his technical staff and the broader objectives of the national team program will be communicated in due course.
