Uganda’s cycling team delivered a commendable performance at the 2026 African Road Cycling Championships in Kisumu, Kenya, with Charles Kagimu and Paul Miro securing bronze medals for the country.
The continental championships, held from 21–25 October 2026, brought together some of Africa’s leading cyclists to compete for honours in the Individual Time Trial (ITT) and Road Race events.
Uganda’s Charles Kagimu demonstrated his experience and determination, claiming bronze in the Men’s Elite Individual Time Trial before narrowly missing out on another podium finish with fourth place in the Men’s Elite Road Race.
The results marked an encouraging performance for Kagimu, who revealed that he had not competed in a Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) race since September 2025.
Reflecting on his performance, Kagimu expressed mixed emotions, acknowledging his disappointment at missing out on defending his continental ITT title and narrowly missing the podium in the road race.
Despite these setbacks, he remained proud of his achievements and the team’s collective effort, describing the championships as a renewed source of motivation to return to competitive racing and challenge for continental honours.
Uganda also celebrated another podium finish through Paul Miro, who secured bronze in the Men’s Under-23 Road Race, adding to the country’s medal tally.
The Ugandan contingent, which included Kagimu, Miro, Shafik Mugalu and Lawrence Lorot, demonstrated resilience and teamwork throughout the championships.
Kagimu particularly appreciated his teammates and the volunteers who supported the Ugandan delegation during the competition, highlighting the collective determination that enabled the team to complete the championships despite the challenges encountered.
The two bronze medals represent an encouraging achievement for Ugandan cycling and reflect the potential of the country’s athletes to compete at continental level.
The Uganda Olympic Committee congratulates Charles Kagimu, Paul Miro and the entire cycling team for their dedication, perseverance and commitment to representing Uganda with pride.
Their performances provide further encouragement for the continued development of cycling in Uganda as athletes set their sights on future continental and international competitions.
