Uganda kicked off the 2025 East African Community Inter-Parliamentary Games in style, cruising to a 4–1 victory over Burundi in an entertaining opener under the floodlights at MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo.

Impact substitute Hon. Denis Ssekabira stole the evening, coming off the bench to bag a sensational hat trick. Hon. John Lematia added Uganda’s fourth, while Hon. Shabani Nimubona netted the lone goal for Burundi.

The match was only the beginning of a vibrant day in Kampala.

Earlier, the Games were officially launched, signaling the start of two weeks where sport becomes a platform for regional diplomacy and unity. This year’s opening leaned heavily into symbolism: Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa presided over a colourful ceremony, followed by a spirited march from Parliament to Kololo—legislators from across the region walking side by side in a show of solidarity and competitive spirit.

The Inter-Parliamentary Games again underline the EAC’s commitment to integration beyond political dialogue. Over the next 14 days, lawmakers will compete in football, netball, volleyball, basketball, athletics, golf, darts, tug-of-war and more—effectively turning Kampala into the epicentre of East African sports diplomacy.

Uganda, as hosts, welcome delegations from Kenya, Burundi and South Sudan, each nation eager to showcase talent, foster camaraderie and deepen the bonds that unite the region.
