Uganda has made its debut at the World Rowing Beach Sprint Finals in Qingdao, China, marking an important milestone for the country’s development and growing participation in international rowing.

National rower Elijah Namunyu represented Uganda at the competition, taking on some of the world’s leading Beach Sprint athletes in challenging water conditions. He demonstrated improvement across his two Time Trials, finishing 30th overall out of 45 competitors.

Namunyu’s performance also placed him as the second-highest-ranked African rower at the event. He finished ahead of Egypt’s representative, the 2025 African champion, and Libya’s representative, the 2025 African Under-23 silver medallist. South Africa’s representative, a 2025 African bronze medallist and World Championships quarter-finalist, was the only African competitor to finish ahead of him.

Competing against athletes from across the world offers an opportunity to assess performance levels, build experience and prepare for future international competitions.

The debut also comes at a significant time for Ugandan rowing as the country prepares for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games. Marcel Andrew Otim is set to represent Uganda in Coastal Rowing Beach Sprints, bringing further attention to the discipline as Uganda continues its preparations for the global youth sporting event.

Uganda’s appearance at the World Rowing Beach Sprint Finals is a positive step in the country’s journey in international rowing, with Namunyu’s performance providing valuable experience and a foundation for continued development in the sport.
