Uganda’s rising table tennis star, Joseph Francis Sebatindira, has successfully defended his title at the 2026 International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) World Hopes Week and Challenge in Sheffield, United Kingdom, reinforcing his growing reputation as one of the country’s most promising young sporting talents.
Sebatindira sealed the boys’ singles title with a 3–1 victory over New Zealand’s Lucas Alexandre in the final on 18 October 2026, winning 11–8, 6–11, 11–4, 12–10. The victory saw the Ugandan retain the title he won at the same competition in 2025.
The young star demonstrated resilience and determination throughout the competition, bouncing back after dropping the second game to secure the next two and complete his successful title defence.
His performance followed a strong opening day in which he recorded eight victories from nine matches, including wins over opponents from Mexico, Colombia, England, Belgium, Egypt, Romania, Ireland and Qatar.
The 2026 edition was particularly significant for Sebatindira, marking his final appearance in the ITTF World Hopes programme’s Under-12 category. Having made his debut in 2024 in Asunción, Paraguay, he has continued to gain valuable international exposure and experience against some of the world’s emerging table tennis talents.
His latest achievement comes at an important time as Uganda prepares for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, where he is expected to represent the country in the men’s singles and mixed doubles events alongside Jemimah Nakawala. The Games will provide another opportunity for the young athletes to test themselves on the international stage and continue their development.
Sebatindira’s success highlights the importance of sustained athlete development, international competition and investment in young sporting talent. His journey also serves as an inspiration to other young Ugandans aspiring to excel in sport.
As the country looks ahead to Dakar 2026, Uganda celebrates Sebatindira’s achievement and wishes him continued success in the next chapter of his sporting journey.
