The gathering, taking place from 1–4 November in St John’s, brings together Heads of Government, ministers, senior officials and representatives from the Commonwealth’s 56 member countries under the theme “Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth.”

Dr Rukare’s participation places the Commonwealth Sport Movement at the centre of discussions on how sport can contribute to broader Commonwealth priorities, particularly youth empowerment, healthier communities, economic opportunity and stronger international partnerships.

Commonwealth Sport Summit Brings Leaders Together

A major highlight of the programme is the Commonwealth Sport Summit, held on 2 November as an official CHOGM side event.

Under the theme “Delivering a Resilient and Prosperous Commonwealth Through Sport,” the Summit brings together political leaders, sports administrators, athletes, development partners and industry stakeholders to explore how sport can create lasting impact across Commonwealth nations.

Dr Rukare is providing leadership in discussions on the power and potential of sport, including its role in promoting resilient and inclusive societies, supporting economic prosperity and strengthening cooperation among Commonwealth countries.

The programme features three central themes: Commonwealth Moves, Commonwealth Growth and Commonwealth Unity.

The discussions are also intended to contribute to the development of the St John’s Pledge on Sport for a Resilient and Prosperous Commonwealth, setting out practical commitments and partnerships that can extend beyond the meeting.

Dr Rukare Meets Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister

A key highlight of Dr Rukare’s engagements in Antigua and Barbuda was a meeting with the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, the Rt Hon Gaston Browne.

The engagement provided an opportunity to strengthen relations between Commonwealth Sport and the host nation while highlighting the important role sport plays in fostering cooperation, promoting youth development and advancing shared Commonwealth priorities.

Dr Rukare’s engagement with the Prime Minister reflects the continued importance of dialogue between sporting leadership and government in advancing the Commonwealth Sport Movement.

Commonwealth Sport Leadership and Stakeholder Engagement

Dr Rukare’s engagements in Antigua and Barbuda also bring together leaders and representatives from across the Commonwealth sporting movement.

Among the personalities involved in the wider CHOGM and Commonwealth Sport programme are Antigua and Barbuda’s Minister of Sports and Creative Industries, the Honourable Dwayne George; Commonwealth Sport Deputy Chief Executive Officer Martin Reynolds; Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey; and cricket legend Sir Vivian Richards, who is serving as CHOGM 2026 Envoy.

Other Summit contributors include athletes and sports leaders from across the Commonwealth, among them Akeem Stewart of Trinidad and Tobago, Alphanso Cunningham of Jamaica, and representatives from government, sport and industry.

Dr Rukare has also been pictured alongside Sir Vivian Richards during engagements in Antigua and Barbuda ahead of CHOGM, reflecting the intersection of sport, leadership and Commonwealth cooperation.

Uganda’s Role in the Commonwealth Sport Movement

Dr Rukare’s participation is particularly significant for Uganda, where he also serves as President of the Commonwealth Games Association of Uganda.

His leadership at Commonwealth Sport provides an opportunity to advance the interests of member nations, strengthen partnerships and promote the role of sport in development.

For Uganda, the Commonwealth Sport Movement remains an important platform for athlete development, international representation and cooperation through major sporting events, including the Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth Youth Games.

The CHOGM engagement also comes at a time when Commonwealth Sport is building on the momentum of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games and looking ahead to the Malta 2027 Commonwealth Youth Games and the Centenary Games in Amdavad, India, in 2030.

Sport as a Catalyst for Commonwealth Unity

The Commonwealth Sport Summit reinforces the growing recognition of sport as a tool for advancing shared Commonwealth priorities.

Through dialogue, partnerships and practical commitments, the gathering seeks to demonstrate how sport can contribute to public health, youth opportunities, economic development, social cohesion and international cooperation.

Dr Rukare’s participation in CHOGM 2026 underscores Commonwealth Sport’s commitment to working with governments, athletes, sporting organisations and partners to build a more inclusive, resilient and prosperous Commonwealth through sport.
