The Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) held its Athletes’ Commission elections on the 23rd of September, 2017. As per the UOC Constitution, the Athletes’ Commission is governed by a charter, and which comprises;
Eight (8) members directly elected by the athletes belonging to the UOC Member Federations in good standing, Two (2) members are appointed by the UOC Executive Committee, any member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athletes’ Commission who is a citizen of Uganda and who was nominated by the Executive to the IOC for election to such position; and Any member of the Athletes’ Commission of ANOCA who is a citizen of Uganda and who was nominated by ANOCA for election to such position.
Each candidate was duly nominated the President and Secretary General of a Federation in good standing and submitted his/her nomination documents to the UOC Secretariat by the 22nd September 2017 before 2:00 pm.
They were only six (6) members that were directly nominated by their federations and these included Irene KASUUBO and Hakim SEMPEREZA from weightlifting, Aisha KAGERE and Emmanuel WABUYAKA from Hockey, Charlotte MUDOOLA and Michael WOKORACH from the Rugby Union. They were two nominations from Patrick NTEGE from Football and Daniel MIHIGO from Badminton whose nominations were null and void because of failure to submit their nomination form before the set deadline.
The Two (2) members that were nominated by the UOC included Stephen KIPROITICH the London 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist in the Marathon and his team captain in the same games Ganzi MUGULA. Therefore, there are two (2) positions that are still vacant. We shall open up nominations in a stipulated period of time so as to fill up the two (2) positions said the Returning officer Mr. Michael WANDERA.
