Sustainability is a topic that has become increasingly important in recent years, with the need for individuals and organizations to minimize their impact on the environment and create a more sustainable future for generations to come. The Sustainability in Sport Commission of the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) hosted a National Training on Essentials of Sustainability in Sport and Environment at their headquarters from April 14 to 16, 2023. The training aimed at equipping participants with the tools and knowledge needed to promote sustainability within sports organizations.
Over the course of the training, various subjects were addressed, among them was the Sustainability Strategy of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the principles that underpin sustainability. The IOC’s Sustainability Strategy particularly aims to minimize the ecological impact of the Olympic Games and capitalize on their beneficial social and economic effects. The principles of sustainability that were emphasized included adopting a holistic approach to sustainability, striking a balance between economic, social, and environmental requirements, and considering the needs of future generations.
Furthermore, essential steps that organizations can take to promote sustainability were explored. These steps included assessing their starting point, defining their vision and strategy, demonstrating leadership, establishing effective governance, engaging stakeholders, identifying key issues and scope, communicating among others. By taking these steps, organizations can promote sustainability and achieve their sustainability goals.
The three-day workshop culminated in a discussion of the challenges that organizations may face when promoting sustainability, such as the need to change established practices, the need for additional resources, and the need to ensure legal compliance. Nonetheless, by prioritizing sustainability, organizations can reduce their environmental impact and create long-term value for themselves and their stakeholders. The training provided valuable insights and tools for promoting sustainability in the context of sports and the environment, and highlighted the importance of working together to build a more sustainable future.
