The Commonwealth Games Association of Uganda (CGAU) marked the global celebration of Commonwealth Day by joining other Commonwealth Games Associations (CGAs) around the world in commemorating this important occasion under the theme ‘Forging a sustainable and peaceful common future’.
The Commonwealth Games Association of Uganda (CGAU) was happy to be part of the Commonwealth Day celebrations, which were about recognizing the great work that female athletes from Uganda are doing. The CGAU together with British High Commission Kampala celebrated female athletes who have achieved great success in sports.
The focus of the celebration was on promoting gender equality in sports and highlighting the role of the Commonwealth in supporting sporting success. During the celebrations a digital profile was showcased on some of the most talented athletes like Teddy Nakimuli (Boxing), Anna Harriot Anzoa (Table tennis), Asiimwe Ritah (Badminton) and Kabendera Asina (Basketball) who shared about the challenges they face, their determination and resilience in overcoming the obstacles and achieving sporting success.
Mr. Moses Mwase, Vice President of the CGAU, during the celebration expressed excitement about the association’s role in engaging the community and thanked the British High Commission for their support in shining the light on Ugandan female athletes. He also acknowledged the challenges faced by the athletes and assured them of the association’s continued support.
This year’s Commonwealth Day celebrations aligned with the Commonwealth Year of the Youth 2023, which will be highlighted by the 7th Commonwealth Youth Games to be held from 4-11 August in Trinidad and Tobago. This recognizes the potential of young people to shape the Commonwealth’s future and the global network of free markets since there are over 1.4 billion people under the age of 30 in the Commonwealth, and it’s important to support and empower them.
The CGAU is proud to support the values of the Commonwealth and promote gender equality in sports. The Association looks forward to continuing to work together to create a brighter future for sports in Uganda.
